After removing the six bolts, the pressure plate comes off. The rod is the clutch pushrod, which pushes the pressure plate out when you pull in the clutch lever. It's important to make sure the O-rings on it are in good shape or replaced. The bearing in the pressure plate allows the pushrod to remain stationary while the pressure plate spins.
