  • FireFox fonts suck under RH9 w/ LCD Monitor.

As I've seen with a number of apps, if you don't have xft support fonts looks like crap under Mozilla and Firefox.

Under RedHat 9, to get decent looking fonts on my particular LCD monitor setup (SAMSUNG SyncMaster 192T) I compiled firefox from source. They use this .mozconfig setup so instead of adding options to the Configure line you add them into .mozconfig. (see article below).

The lines I added for my particular setup are:

    ac_add_options --enable-xft
    ac_add_options --disable-debug
    ac_add_options --enable-optimize
    ac_add_options --enable-strip
    ac_add_options --prefix=/usr/local/firefox-1.0-fromsource

The --enable-xft gets me reasonable looking fonts. Bolds are coming out a bit fatter than in Mozilla 1.7 but otherwise everything looks about right. The prefix option identifies where "make install" should put the resulting executables. The rest are to build a slightly quicker and smaller version of FireFox. (although I imagine the FireFox developers would want you to not disable debugging or strip the build so that crash reports have enough info in them ... )
