These retrofit kits are being used in the Philippians to clean up 2-stroke emissions.

"The majority of the fuel injection components (fuel pump,
fuel rail, fuel injector, blast valve, oil pump, ECU, air
pump, generator, index sensor) came from an Aprilia
Scarabeo motor scooter, which uses an Orbital ABDI
system."

This is awesome, but the sad portion is that it appears that further work on it is dead. It is listed under 'past work' on Envirofit.org's website, and it looks like 100% of their current effort is with increasing cookstove efficiency. I'm surprised that there is no mention of further commercialization of the retrofit.

I hope that with the current crop of engines with direct injection that the reliable hardware necessary (injectors, mostly) will become more available for these sorts of projects.

I was also thinking, but I can't find reference to this- how does the retrofit affect the overall reliability of the engine? If you're cutting down overall fuel usage, you're probably also cutting down how much oil is splashed on the cylinder walls and bearings. Unfortunately, this is probably something that can only really be evaluated after years in the field.

they are using an oil pump to inject the oil
so it no longer uses premix.

the oil pump is controled by the fuel injection ECM.

What I'm not seeing is any more recent followup with respect to how the folks with the retrofit are living with it. I'm absolutely convinced that the direct injection technique provides lower emissions and better fuel consumption, however, what happens after 5 years of these things on the road, the various fixes, parts availability... and the results of all the amateur mechanics repairing these things. A change like this is awesome, but without commitment to the infrastructure behind it, it will be ultimately doomed.

The nice thing is, this is all off the shelf technology, that's been widely used in similar applications. Unless Orbital Engines in Australia goes broke, parts should be available indefinitely.
