Welcome Cousins,

The Hyde Genealogy project goal is to identify and number the various family lines and incorporate the written data with any matches from the Hyde DNA project at http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Hyde/

Participation in the DNA project is not required. The primary purpose of this forum is to update existing records, examine conflicting records and correct errors whenever possible.

The Hyde surname is thought to be quite common, as the definition of a "hide" is an Anglo-Saxon law term for a measure of land that could be farmed with one plough and/or support an extended family for a year. A "Hide" in the Domesday Book is also referred to as a "Knight's fee".

In America, the spelling changed fron "Hide" to "Hyde" in significant numbers between 1790 and 1820.

To make it easy to search for particular individuals, subject lines of posts should contain three things: NAME/DATE/PLACE. The NAME of the person you are researching, an approximate DATE when they were born, married or died, and the PLACE where they carried this out.

Example, "Jonathan Hyde B 1727 Wexford Ireland"

Or "Jonathan Hyde M Ann Smithson, betw 1740-1750 New Windsor MD"

If you're compiling a book or have written a book, please let me know so that numbers can be assigned to family lines already researched. One section of what will become the Hyde Genealogy web site will be devoted to these books and where they can be purchased. There will be a section for records in the public domain. Another section will be devoted to out of print or privately held information that the owners are willing to share.

This is a test version of the list software, and not the final home of the Hyde Genealogy project or the final way the forum will look. If there's something you've wanted to do on other lists but couldn't - possibly a way of doing searches or organizing data - tell us and we'll do our best to make it happen. Questions and suggestions should be emailed to ann.sterling@gmail.com

If you're getting an error message or there's something that you find irritating, please email me and cc Yermo at yml@yml.com - the "daily digest" can be turned off via "Settings" at the top right.

The group is open to anyone who wishes to join, but to keep spammers out, joining is by invitation-only. Your email address is not visible and will never be given out or used for other purposes. You can invite anyone interested in researching Hyde genealogy by clicking on "Invite" at top right.

Upon joining, please send an introductory post with your furthest known Hyde ancestor in the subject line in the "Name Date Place" format. This will help me merge you with an existing line or assign a new number to target when further research is needed.

Thanks for your interest and participation and best of luck in your research,

Ann Sterling
