  • I kid you not, there is actually a company that has patented a THOUGHT.
    03/19/2006 5:41PM
    There are simply no words to describe this stupidity:

    "... there is the rather bizarre question of whether simply thinking about a patented fact infringes the patent. The idea smacks of thought control, to say nothing of unenforceability. It seems like something out of a novel by Philip K. Dick — or Kafka. But it highlights the uncomfortable truth that the Patent Office and the courts have in recent decades ruled themselves into a corner from which they must somehow extricate themselves."

    THE MOTHER OF ALL BATTLES

  • Using VMWare and 'dd' to virtualize a physical machine.
    03/18/2006 10:43AM
    The problem:

    You have an old machine running old software under an old operating system. You want to migrate to a new operating system but need to continue running your old apps.

    Answer: VMWare 5.5.1.

    Using 'dd' under Linux you can create an image file of your entire disk, assuming you have enough space in your filesystem and that you're running a 2.6 kernel (if the desk drive you are imaging is larger than 2 gigs).

    There is a tutorial called Virtualizing Your Desktop using VMWare.

    The idea is to create a blank virtual machine in VMWare, copy the dd image to the vmware data directory for the machine you just created and edit the config file. VMWare is then able to open the image file directly.

    The .vmdk file would look something like this:

    # Disk DescriptorFile

    version=1
    CID=fffffffe
    parentCID=ffffffff
    createType="monolithicFlat"

    # Extent description
    RW <total sectors> FLAT "server.dd” 0

    # The Disk Data Base
    #DDB

    ddb.virtualHWVersion = "3"
    ddb.geometry.cylinders = "<cylinders>"
    ddb.geometry.heads = "<heads>"
    ddb.geometry.sectors = "<sectors>"
    ddb.adapterType = "ide" or "buslogic"

    The key is the "flat" keywords. See the tutorial for more info.

  • A Bad Omen for the Easter Fire
    03/15/2006 11:38PM
    According to the Washington Post:

    "Strong winds and dry weather that create prime conditions for fast-spreading wildfires prompted the National Weather Service yesterday to raise a "red flag" warning for a day in Virginia, the District and nearly all Maryland counties.

    The alert was lifted last night, but officials are still discouraging residents from open-air burning of any kind -- including brush, debris or campfires -- until enough steady rain has fallen to reduce the regional fire hazard."

    Let's hope the situation improves before middle of April.

  • Solomons Island Restaurants Destroyed by Fire

    According to the Washington Post:

    "A three-alarm fire fueled by fierce winds battered downtown Solomons Island yesterday, largely destroying two of the island's landmarks, the Lighthouse Inn and Bowen's Inn."
