  • Top Advisory Panel Warns Erosion of U.S. Science
    10/13/2005 2:03PM
More in a continuing saga that I've been complaining about for many years, as reported on slashdot:

"From the NYT: A panel of experts convened by the National Academies, the nation's leading science advisory group, called yesterday for an urgent and wide-ranging effort to strengthen scientific competitiveness. The 20-member panel, reporting at the request of a bipartisan group in Congress, said that without such an effort the United States 'could soon lose its privileged position.' It cited many examples of emerging scientific and industrial power abroad and listed 20 steps the United States should take to maintain its global lead."

  • No Late Fees, But Watch Out For Late Rates
    10/13/2005 10:42AM
As reported by the Washington Post:

"After extolling its new features, Citibank's Simplicity card offer warns that late payments could trigger an increase in the interest rate charged on balances as well as a negative credit report. Such reports often cause other lenders to boost interest rates on a consumer's other outstanding debts.

American Express Co.'s Clear card will increase a user's interest rate to 28.74 percent if a consumer pays late twice a year."

The article goes on to imply these "no fee" cards are being sent to consumers to replace existing "traditional" cards.

  • Scientists Finding Out What Losing Sleep Does to a Body
    10/08/2005 11:36PM
According to an article on WashingtonPost.com:

"Beyond leaving people bleary-eyed, clutching a Starbucks cup and dozing off at afternoon meetings, failing to get enough sleep or sleeping at odd hours heightens the risk for a variety of major illnesses, including cancer, heart disease, diabetes and obesity, recent studies indicate."

You can read the full article here.

In my own experience, I have seen a tremendous correlation between lack of sleep and increased UC symptoms.

  • Extracting Drinking Water From Diesel Exhaust
    10/05/2005 3:10PM
Sounds counterintuitive, but the Army is testing a new technology to extract drinking water from diesel exhaust at the ratio of one gallon of water for every two gallons of diesel fuel burned in military vehicles; the process has been developed by United Technologies.
