So You Want To Build A Baja Bug

I made the "mistake" of watching "Dust To Glory" over the weekend, a documentary on the famous Baja 1000 race, held in Baja California, Mexico every year. The race starts in Ensenada and ends in La Paz after running a 1000 mile course along the way. Apparently, fewer than 25% of those folks who start the race actually finish it in the 32 hour window allowed for completion of the course.

But what I found to be particularly intrigueing is that fact that a large percentage of the vehicles which are entered in (and finish) the race are old air cooled VW platforms. So I wondered, what would it take to build one of these things? The answer is, not much beyond a running old VW Beetle and a "baja kit".

Here's a basic howto site I found, though googling will produce plenty more. Now the next question is, what's the best way to get a car down to Baja?

"The U.S. Supreme Court said on Monday that it would consider an appeal by online auctioneer eBay Inc. in a case that could determine when it is appropriate to grant an injunction against a patent infringer."

Truckers Take First Steps Toward Hydrogen

It turns out that long haul truckers have been retrofitting their diesel rigs with on-the-fly Hydrogen generators. The hydrogen is injected into the fuel system of the truck for significant gains in power, fuel economy and pollution reduction. Get the details here.

Misnamed "Linux" worm in the wild.

You gotta love mis-reporting. They're calling it a "Linux" worm but it's really just a remote PHP/CGI exploit that doesn't expose root.

Here's what slashdot has to say:

McAfee reports that a Linux worm has been found in the wild. The Linux/Lupper.worm is a derivative of the Linux/Slapper worm which also exists for BSD, just to be crossplatform. From the McAfee description: The worm blindly attacks web servers by sending malicious http requests on port 80. If the target server is running one of the vulnerable scripts at specific URLs and is configured to permit external shell commands and remote file download in the PHP/CGI environment, a copy of the worm could be downloaded and executed."

Keep PHP and your scripts up to date.
