I made the "mistake" of watching
"Dust To Glory" over the weekend, a documentary on the famous
Baja 1000 race, held in Baja California, Mexico every year. The race starts in
Ensenada and ends in
La Paz after running a 1000 mile course along the way. Apparently, fewer than 25% of those folks who start the race actually finish it in the 32 hour window allowed for completion of the course.
But what I found to be particularly intrigueing is that fact that a large percentage of the vehicles which are entered in (and finish) the race are old air cooled VW platforms. So I wondered, what would it take to build one of these things? The answer is, not much beyond a running old VW Beetle and a "baja kit".
Here's a
basic howto site I found, though googling will produce plenty more. Now the next question is, what's the best way to get a car down to Baja?
